So I dropped a tweet the other day about how demanding more from yourself can transform your life.
Pretty straightforward, right?
But then someone asked, "Hey, how exactly do you do that?" And it hit me – sometimes we throw these ideas out there without really breaking down the "how."
Let's talk about that moment when you stare at your goals. That little voice in your head starts with, "Who do you think you are?" bullshit. We've all been there. It's like being your own worst enemy, setting up roadblocks before you even get started.
The Reality Check
Demanding more from yourself isn't just about pushing harder – it's about getting smarter with how you approach life. And yeah, sometimes it means calling yourself out on your own BS.
Think about it: How many times have you said "f*ck this" when things got a little tough? Maybe you started learning guitar, didn't sound like a rock star after a week, and decided it wasn't for you.
Or hit the gym for three days and got pissed when you didn't see instant abs. (Thanks, Instagram, for those unrealistic expectations.)
The Mindset Shift
Here's what I've learned works:
First up, you've gotta get your head in the right space. This means taking a good, honest look at yourself every day. Like, actually sitting down and asking:
What worked today?
Where did I mess up?
What could I have done differently? (Pro tip: Writing this stuff down makes a huge difference–there's something about putting pen to paper that makes it stick.)
The Control Game
Focus on what you can actually control. Epictetus was one of the first ones to echo this sentiment thousands of years ago.
We waste so much mental energy freaking out about stuff we can't do anything about. It's like our brains are running this endless "What If" game at 3 AM instead of sleeping.
Weather ruins your plans? Cool, what's plan B?
Someone's being a jerk at work? Focus on your response, not their attitude.
Project didn't go as planned? Time to learn, adjust, and come back stronger.
The Reframing Game
The real magic happens when you start reframing everything as an opportunity. And I mean everything:
Failed at something? Congrats, you just found one way that doesn't work.
Someone's criticizing you? Instead of getting defensive, try thinking "Okay, what if they have a point?"
Feeling overwhelmed? Break that mountain into smaller hills.
The Patience Game
Look, we live in a world of instant everything. Amazon same-day delivery, DoorDash to your couch, Netflix auto-playing the next episode. But real growth? That shit takes time.
It's not about overnight success or quick fixes. It's about:
Showing up daily, even when you don't feel like it.
Celebrating small wins (because they add up).
Trusting the process when progress feels slow.
Remembering why you started when things get tough.
The Truth About Transformation
The thing about demanding more from yourself: it's not about being perfect. It's about being better than yesterday. Sometimes that means:
Taking the L and learning from it.
Admitting when you're wrong (even when it stings).
Doing the hard thing instead of the easy thing.
Being patient when everything in you wants instant results.
Look, I'm not gonna lie – building this mindset takes time. It's like going to the gym for your brain.
You won't see results overnight, but stick with it, and you'll start noticing changes in how you handle everything life throws at you.
Remember: The person who can push you the furthest towards your goals is the same person who can hold you back – you. So maybe it's time to have a chat with yourself about what you're really capable of.
What's your next move?
Quote of the Day:
"The chief task in life is simply this: to identify and separate matters so that I can say clearly to myself which are externals not under my control, and which have to do with the choices I actually control." - Epictetus
