Picture this: two paths lie before you.
Path one is paved with excuses. "It's not my fault." "My circumstances are different." "The system is against me." It's comfortable there, with plenty of space for self-pity and blame.
Path two transforms those same circumstances into opportunities. Same challenges, different mindset. It's about turning negative into positive. Refusing to be controlled by your situation.
The one thing these paths have in common is that they both move forward. Time passes either way.
Do you take path A, filled with excuses, regrets, and self-pity?
Or do you take path B and level up?
Why We Choose Excuses
The choice seems simple, yet so many of us choose that first path. At the first sign of turmoil, we give up. We look for excuses—oh, it's because I don't have the money, or I didn't have the information, or I wasn't raised right.
You can use those as excuses, but at the end of the day, life still goes on. There are still 24 hours in a day. Those 24 hours will pass before you know it; it's tomorrow and then next week and then next year. Where are you at?
You're in the same spot you are now.
Embracing the Challenge
So what's the point? I see that as even more of a reason to get your shit together. Look at it as a challenge: okay, so these are extra things I have to overcome—fine.
Every one of us is on a different path, but all those paths are moving forward. Some of us have more obstacles than others. There's nothing we can do about that though. We can't worry about someone else's path being cleaner than ours or ours being cleaner than somebody else's.
Ask yourself: Are you spending more time complaining about your obstacles or figuring out how to overcome them?
The Reality Check
Either way, We still have to make it to the destination. There are still goals to accomplish. Milestones to crush. Objectives to take care of. There's money to be made and a life to live.
What does it really matter? If it takes us longer, it takes us longer. If we have challenges others don't have to deal with, that doesn't change the fact that we still have to deal with them.
That's life.
Time Waits for No One
These are things we have to consider. At the end of the day, we keep moving forward. Time doesn't stop. It doesn't care about your excuses. It just keeps ticking.
Time is a finite resource. Arguably it's the most valuable resource we have because it's something we always spend regardless of our choices. You can't save it. You can't store it. You can only use it.
Time is always going to pass; it's more about what we do with it. You either relish in it and use it as an opportunity to grow or you sit back and wallow.
Choose wisely.
Choose Your Path Wisely
So we're back to those two paths. Both lead forward, both consume the same amount of time. But only one leads to growth, to achievement, to becoming the person you want to be.
The excuses will always be there, waiting for you to grab onto them. The opportunities are there too, though sometimes they're harder to see. Which will you choose today?
Your 7-Day Challenge
Here's what I want you to do: For the next week, catch yourself every time you start to make an excuse. Write it down. Then immediately ask: "What's one opportunity hidden in this situation?"
Don't just read this article and nod along. Actually do this. Set a reminder on your phone right now for the next seven days.
After a week, look back at your list. You'll be amazed at how many opportunities were hiding in plain sight, disguised as problems.
Your path is yours alone to walk. Now go make it count.
