Your cursor sits over the comment box on someone else’s pull request. The thing you’re looking at isn’t wrong. It’s a shortcut: a magic number where a constant should be, a special case handled inline instead of named. It’ll pass every test. It’ll ship whether you say anything or not.
It’s also going to cost somebody.
Not today. Nobody’s checking today. In six months, someone you don’t know will open this file. They’ll find its shape odd and spend an afternoon figuring out why it was made like this. You know that now, in this half second, looking at the diff. They won’t know it until they’re already inside the cost.
This is the moment. Not the code review. The code review is thirty seconds of typing, if you type at all. The moment is that half second before you choose. Will the next six months be yours or belong to a stranger?
Most of the moments like this get missed because nothing tells you they’re happening.
No test fails. No reviewer flags it. The PR can be approved as it is. This is the easiest choice now: it means less friction, a quicker merge, and one fewer conversation with someone who might get defensive.
Hierocles created the circles long before pull requests were a thing. It starts with yourself, then your household, your town, and finally everyone else. The goal was to pull the outer rings inward so a stranger’s cost felt like a neighbor’s. He was thinking about people he could eventually meet. You’re writing for people you will never meet. This happens at a distance and speed his model never considered. The instruction doesn’t change. The gap it has to cross got wider.
You don’t get to know if you pulled the ring in. There’s no ticket for the five minutes you spent typing the comment, no ticket for the five minutes you didn’t. The stranger who inherits either version will never know your name, and you will never know theirs. The only record that this moment happened at all is what you do inside it.
That’s the whole obligation. Not a policy. Not a checklist item. A half second, repeated, for as long as you’re the one holding the cursor.
