It's 5 AM, your alarm's blaring, and you're faced with a choice. Option A: Roll out of bed and hit the gym like you promised yourself. Option B: Hit snooze and cuddle up with your excuses.
We both know which one feels better in the moment.
In the pursuit of our goals, we often turn to motivation as the driving force. Motivation can spark us. But, only routines can drive lasting success.
The Problem with Motivation
There comes a point where you need some motivation. Just to get you moving, thinking, and strategizing. A kick in the ass! We've all seen the Tony Robbins types or Gary Vee, using motivational techniques and tactics to get people to think and act. They're pros at lighting that initial fire.
But the biggest problem is once we kind of get that initial jolt of energy, that feeling that we need to do this. Then it kind of falls on deaf ears. It's something we might do for a day and then the next day we're back to our old habits. The biggest problem is you need to look at the big picture. Motivation is just the spark, not the fuel. Motivation without routine is like a car without gas – flashy, but useless. You want real change? Stop relying on feel-good pep talks and start building rock-solid routines.
The Power of Routines
Routines kick motivation's ass every time.
Think of motivation as a that friend who hypes you up to hit the gym but never shows up themselves. Sure, they'll text you about how you need to get fit, but they're not gonna drag your ass out of bed at 5 AM. Routines, though? They're your real workout buddy. They don't just talk the talk. They're there, spotting you, pushing you. They make sure you show up, even when you'd rather stay in bed.
You want results? Build a routine. Set up a system, a schedule - whatever you want to call it. Just make sure it's something that holds your feet to the fire. Because at the end of the day, it's routines that'll make sure you're actually hitting those marks and crushing those goals. Not some fleeting burst of motivation.
Building Routines That Stick
So how do you actually build these game-changing routines?
Start Small, Be Consistent
Don't try to overhaul your entire life overnight. Pick one thing - maybe it's reading for 10 minutes before bed. Do it at the same time, same place, every damn day. No excuses.Make It Easy on Yourself
Remove the barriers. If you want to hit the gym in the morning, sleep in your workout clothes if you have to. Whatever it takes to get it done.Track Your Shit
Use a habit tracker, a journal, whatever. Just keep tabs on what you're doing. It's like a high five to yourself every time you check that box.Be Patient, But Not Too Patient
Give it a month before you start expecting miracles. But if something's not working after a while, don't be afraid to switch it up. The goal is progress, not perfection.Plan for the Crap Days
Because they're gonna happen. Have a backup plan for when life tries to derail you. Maybe it's a shorter version of your routine, but it's something.
Remember, the best routine is the one you'll actually stick to. It's not about being perfect; it's about being consistent. That's how you turn motivation into real, lasting change.
Stop chasing motivation alone. It's a losing game that'll leave you feeling like a failure with a side of regret. Instead, build routines that'll drag your ass across the finish line, whether you feel like it or not.
Remember, success isn't about feeling good. It's about showing up, day in and day out, even when you'd rather eat glass. That's what routines do. They turn your goals from pipe dreams into reality.
So, what are you waiting for? The time for talk is over. Get to work.
Quote of the Day:
"Every habit and capability is confirmed and grows in its corresponding actions, walking by walking, and running by running... therefore, if you want to do something make a habit of it, if you don't want to do that, don't, but make a habit of something else instead." - Epictetus
